Michael Guarino, 42, of South Beach, N.Y., turned himself in on June 27 on charges stemming from a chimney scam that took place on May 18. He was charged with home improvement without certification of registration, conspiracy to commit criminal impersonation and conspiracy to commit receipt of money, goods or services obtained illegally.
According to the report, Guarino hired three men, who responded to a craigslist ad, to complete unnecessary repairs to homes using another chimney repair company's name. He knew these men were unlicensed and had no formal training in home improvement work.
