NEW CANAAN — Want to learn more about firearms, traffic stops or just the local police department?

New Canaan Police are accepting applicants for its 2017 Civilian Police Academy, which provides hands-on opportunities for residents to learn more about the department and for officers to receive feedback and improve community relations.

The academy is made up of nine three-hour classes one night a week from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the New Canaan Police Department. Classes run from from April 18 to June 13. The training includes classes on firearms, traffic enforcement, domestic violence, use of force and a department overview.

People interested in the academy may apply through the New Canaan police website. The deadline for applications is March 31. Class size is limited to 20 people. Applicants must be 18 years old and have no felony or misdemeanor convictions. They will also be subject to a standard background check. Preference is given to New Canaan residents.; @erin_kayata
