NEW CANAAN — Community, care and cakes came together for a good cause Sunday afternoon when New Canaan CARES hosted its annual cake baking and decorating contest, held at the YMCA.

“This is a great event to bring families together, get away from the screens and be creative,” said executive director Ellen Brezovsky.

There were 26 competitors who submitted cakes in five categories. Children also enjoyed some games, crafts, decorating lessons and cupcake eating. Proceeds from the event went to New Canaan CARES, a nonprofit community organization that workds to advance the health and well-being of youth and families.

“We turned this into a birthday party this year,” said board chair Sara Schubert, as the group is turning 40. “Who doesn’t love a birthday party?”

“I think New Canaan CARES is really about building community and strengthening family,” Brezovsky said, noting this was the perfect event to promote those goals.
