Historian and author John Laurence Busch will speak to the Senior Men's Club of New Canaan at their meeting on Friday, Dec. 10, at 10 a.m. at St. Mark's Church.

Busch will discuss why the proposition of making the first crossing of the Atlantic Ocean on a steamship was met with a mixture of skepticism and fear.

Busch is an independent historian who has scoured archives and libraries from Portland, Maine to Savannah, Ga., and across the Atlantic Ocean to Europe in search of new information on the voyage of Captain Moses Rogers and the Steamship Savannah. In so doing, he has uncovered a plethora of never-before-published material, which allows him to tell the saga of the first ocean crossing by a steamship in unprecedented detail in his book "Steam Coffin."

By piecing together many disparate sources of evidence, Busch also has shown conclusively just what Moses Rogers and the Savannah accomplished for eternity.

The Senior Men's Club of New Canaan is open to new members. Visit www.smcnc.org for a complete list of activities.
