The fall fundraiser committee of Getabout, New Canaan's van-based transportation service for town seniors and those with special needs, has begun planning for the annual Getabout benefit and auction, the service's largest fundraising event.

The Committee has scheduled the fundraiser for Sunday, Oct. 17. It will take place at the Country Club of New Canaan.

Last year's fall fundraiser, co-chaired by Getabout Board members Kathy Auda Skaperdas and Robin Busch, generated more than $56,000, with a total attendance of 220.

"Kathy and I are delighted to once again chair Getabout's Fundraiser, which has been such a successful evening for many years now," said Busch. "We are particularly happy that so many of our past committee members are pitching in again this year."

In announcing this year's benefit, Skaperdas said, "The Getabout has significantly expanded our service area over the past year with the addition of free medical rides to each of our immediate neighboring towns, and we're hoping to set new fundraising and attendance records this year, to help finance the growth that this wonderful community asset has seen."

This year's getabout fundraiser committee is anticipating strong results from the Silent Auction, which has become a highlight of the festivities in recent years. "We're also hoping to match -- or exceed -- the past support we've received from local businesses and residents in donating goods and services-in-kind for the auction," Busch said.

The group recently held a wine and cheese planning session at the Skaperdas home, to convene this year's newly-expanded committee. Based on the outstanding feedback from event attendees last fall, the Committee again hopes to program jazz-themed entertainment for the evening, a wine tasting, a "Keep our Vans Rolling" Giving Tree, along with the Silent Auction.
