GFA roundup: Darien athletes make their mark for Dragons
The Greens Farms Academy boys varsity tennis team picked up an important FAA league win with a 5-2 victory at home against Rye Country Day School last week.
The Dragons were led again by the No. 1 doubles team of senior Matt Smith (Purchase, NY) and junior Sean Minson (Darien) who consistently provide the team with early energy with great play and solid wins 6-1, 6-4 victory.
That win was followed-up by the strong third doubles team of freshman Aiden Helfant (Riverside) and junior Jason Garrelick (Wilton) with a 6-0, 6-1 win.
GFA's next win was provided by No. 4 singles Niklas Simonsen (Riverside) who played an extremely clean match despite the wind, winning 6-0, 6-2.
Sealing the win for GFA was the No. 2 doubles team of freshman Jack Ramsay (Darien) and Marcus Ng (Greenwich) who fought back from being down 5-2 in the second set to victorious straight set win 6-3, 7-5.
The match ended with Connor Minson (Darien) winning a battle at No. 2 singles, getting pushed to a third set tie-breaker with an exciting 7-6 (7-3), 4-6, 12-10 victory.
The win moves the Dragon's record to 4-2.
TRACK AND FIELD
The GFA track and field team competed Tuesday at Masters against Masters and Bruswick.
On the girls side, senior Eva Scianna (Trumbull) set her seasons best in the 400m at 1:07.14. Junior Lillian Breier (Southport) and classmate Ryan Morris (Westport) cleared the 100m hurdles in their personal best times of 20.01 and 21.27 respectively.
Eighth grader Caroline McCall (Westport) set the school record in the 1500 race with a blistering 5:28.
The boys team set two school records in Dobbs Ferry. Sophomore Will McCall (Westport) set the boys 1500 mark with a 4:39 clocking. And, the 4x800 team of junior Tyler Bieder (Southport), freshman Charlie Bohnsack (Darien), junior Nick Attai (Bridgport) and senior Scott Barnett (Ridgefield), shattered GFA's old mark by 37 seconds with a 9:24.0.
Senior Aaron Miller (Stamford) set his person best in the 400m at 56.75.
On Saturday, the Dragons travelled to New Milford to compete against Canterbury.
Senior Chloe Messina (Old Greenwich) set her season best in the 200 (30.34), as did Breier in the 300 hurdles (1:02.28).
The boys were led by senior MJ Freeman (Milford), who ran a very fast 100 (10.77) to break his old GFA record of 10.83.
Charlie Bohnsach (Darien) in his first 3,000 ran an impressive 11:10.58 while junior JT McCallister (Norwalk) ran his fasted 1500 of the season (4:42.87).
The Dragon are looking forward to the 2017 NEPSTA New England Championships on May 20 at Cheshire Academy.
Lead-off hitter Janise Park (Bridgeport) was 5-for-5 with five runs scored as the Dragons improved their record to 3-2 with a 15-3 victory over Christian Heritage.
Lucy Nelson (Westport) and Lydia Groves (Riverside) both added three hits each and also scored three runs for the Dragons while winning pitcher Maddy Canning (New Canaan) reached base five times in five at-bats, as well. Celeste Matte (Stratford) added two hits.
It was an up-and-down week for girls lacrosse, who lost their first game before closing out the week with a big road win.
Sacred Heart of Greenwich used a big second-half surge to hand the Dragons their second loss of the season on Monday, by an 18-8 score
Alex Nesi (Fairfield) scored three goals for GFA while Steph Wistreich (Wilton) and Kate Paliotta (Westport) added two goals each. Sarah Peletier (Stamford) had a goal and Bella Litt (Darien) dished out two assists. Kelly Van Hoesen (Greenwich) made 13 saves for the Dragons, who are now 8-2.
Paliotta scored five goals while Van Hoesen came up huge in goal with 17 saves to lead the Dragons to a 9-8 win over Millbrook. Ella Murphy (Darien) and Litt added two goals apiece for GFA. Paliotta had two assists and Wistreich set up one goal.
Dragons goalie Ryan Pilkington (Weston) made 11 saves facing a barrage of Cheshire Academy's shots on Tuesday.
Will Byrne (Darien) scored twice for GFA while Ryan Caione (New Canaan) had one goal and one assist. Zach Liston (Wilton) and Ethan Haas (Darien) both scored single goals while Ian Epps (Darien) had an assist.
The GFA girls varsity tennis team defeated Miss Porter's School Saturday afternoon by a score of 5-2 - their only win in a tough week of games.
The winning doubles team for GFA was at No. 3 where Avery York (Norwalk) and Jocelyn Magrone (Darien) won.
Earlier in the week, GFA travelled to Kingswood-Oxford, but fell by a 6-1 score.
A 6-3 format was played. GFA's lone win came at fourth singles from freshman Stephanie Gentile (Westport).
In a completion of a rain-delayed match from earlier in the season, GFA fell to King by a 5-2 score last week, as well.
Winners were Wagner at second singles (6-3, 6-3) and Boyle at fourth singles (6-1, 6-0).
In the third of four matches during the week, the Dragons fell to Greenwich Academy by a 4-3 score.
Wolfe won 7-6 (7-5), 2-6, 1-0 (10-6), Wagner won 6-1, 6-3, and Boyle won 6-1, 6-3.
