GFA end season strong with help of area athletes

Greens Farms Academy squash players Katie Mackle (New Canaan) and John Selkowitz (Norwalk) both earned top-three finishes at the New England Prep School championships this weekend, while wrestler Griffin Seyfriend (Westport) placed seventh at the U.S. Prep School National Wrestling tournament, highlighting a weekend of big events.
In the boys tournament, the Dragons were kicked up to Class B this season after placing in Class C a year ago.
The boys placed 11th overall with 46 points. Millbrook won the title with 102.
Playing in the third draw, Selkowitz had the best day for GFA, placing third overall.
He won his opening match 11-3, 11-2, 8-11, 0-11, 11-9 to advance to the quarterfinals where he posted a 11-13, 6-11, 11-5, 11-2, 11-6 win.
Selkowitz lost in the quarterfinals by an 11-6, 11-7, 11-9 score, but won the third-place game 12-10, 11-9, 11-4.
Duda Voldman (Stamford) lost his first two matches in the No. 1 draw, but bounced back to advance to the final of the Plate 1 bracket.
After falling 11-0, 11-2, 11-0 in Round of 16 and 10-12, 8-11, 11-7, 11-5, 11-9 in the consolation round, Voldman finally got his first win of the tournament. He posted an 11-7, 11-3, 11-3 to advance to the Plate 1 final where we lost 6-11, 11-4, 11-9, 11-6.
In the No. 2 draw, Jack Soper (Southport) was defeated in the Round of 16 He bounced back to win his first consolation match 9-11, 12-10, 11-7, 11-7 before falling 11-8 11-5, 11-9 in the consi semifinals. Soper rebounded with a 10-12, 7-11, 11-6, 11-4, 11-8 win.
Marshall Bessey (Darien) lost his first round match 11-4, 11-4, 11-7. He won his first consolation match 7-11, 11-6, 11-8, 11-4 before falling 9-11, 11-3, 11-4 11-5. He placed sixth overall, falling 8-11, 11-4, 9-11, 11-6, 11-9.
Jeb Rooney (Darien) was defeated 7-11, 11-3, 11-8, 11-1 in first round, but rebounded to win 11-6, 11-2, 7-11, 12-10 before falling in the consolation semifinals. He won his last match, as well, 9-11, 8-11, 11-7, 13-11, 11-6.
Blake Newcomer (Stamford), playing in the sixth slot, lost 11-1, 11-6, 11-4 in the opener and won two straight consi matches before posting a thrilling 12-10, 10-12, 9-11, 11-9, 11-7 to place ninth overall.
At No. 7, Piero Panariello (Westport) lost his first two matches before bouncing back to win his next two matches, 11-0, 11-3, 11-8 and 11-5, 11-2, 11-5.
The girls traveled to Millbrook School in New York to play in their Class C New England championship matches.
Mackle earned a New England runner-up spot by placing second in the No. 1 draw.
Mackle won her quarterfinal match 11-5, 11-7, 11-2 and won her semifinal match 6-11, 11-9, 12-14, 11-6, 11-5. She fell in the finals 11-2, 11-10, 11-2.
At No. 2, Clare Foley (Southport) earned a first-round bye but fell in the quarterfinals. She won her consolation semifinal 13-11, 11-5, 11-3, but fell in the consolation finals 10-12, 11-8,9-11, 11-5, 12-10.
Ellen Burbank (Southport) got her day started with a win in the No. 3 draw, posting an 11-9, 11-8, 11-7 win in the Round of 16. She fell in the quarterfinals, but advanced to the consolation semifinals where she fell 1-11, 11-1, 11-8, 11-3.
Julia Edwards (Westport) played at No. 4 and fell in a heart-breaking five-setter to open the day. She rebounded, though, to win her first two consolation matches — 11-5, 11-9, 11-8 and 11-6, 11-8, 11-9 before falling in the consolation finals 11-6, 11-7, 12-10.
At No. 5, freshman Lucy Nelson (Westport) won her opening match 12-10, 11-3, 11-7. She was bested in the quarterfinals 11-8, 11-7, 11-3, but won her first two matches of the consolation bracket. After winning 11-5, 11-4, 11-1 and 8-11, 11-7, 6-11, 11-8, 11-9, Nelson advanced to the consolation finals where she lost 11-4, 12-10, 11-6.
Annebelle Kreitler (Fairfield) battled tough in the first round, falling in four sets, but like Nelson before her she also earned two wins in the consolation bracket to advance to the finals there. After winning 9-11, 11-5, 11-8, 11-4, and 11-4, 11-7, 11-4, she was defeated 11-4, 11-7, 11-6.
In the seventh slot, Samara Cohen (Westport) lost in the quarterfinals and consolation semifinals, but won the consolation playoff game 11-2, 11-3, 11-9.
The under-manned Dragons fell short of their 2018 goals, losing in the FAA semifinals to St. Luke’s as the season came to abrupt end on Thursday with an 81-57 loss to the Storm.
Cole Prowitt-Smith (Fairfield) led the way with 17 points while senior Bennett Close (Norwalk) added 14 points. Max Mitchell (Westport) added nine points while senior Henry Holzinger (Westport) also had seven points as did David Basich (Westport).
Close also ripped down nine rebounds.
Two days earlier in the quarterfinals, Prowitt-Smith and Holzinger combined for 43 points as the Dragons rolled to a 70-51 win over Hopkins.
Prowitt-Smith had 23 points and Holzinger tallied 20 for GFA as the two combined for six 3-pointers. Mitchell added eight points while Brady Reynolds (Wilton) added six.
Freshmen Georgie Grabowski (Stratford) sank five 3-point shots and finished with 17 points while Katherine Marcus (New Canaan) added 15 more as the Dragons played their hearts out in a 57-49 loss to Sacred Heart in an FAA quarterfinal in Greenwich.
Kelly van Hoesen (Greenwich) added eight points for the Dragons, who finished the season 9-14 with seven losses of single-digits.
