Firefighters were dispatched to an automatic alarm at South Elementary School at 9:13 p.m. Feb. 14, according to Fire Marshal Fred Baker.

There were reports of smoke coming from the building. Upon their arrival, firefighters found the smoke and haze were coming from a malfunctioning air handler on the rooftop. Baker said the air handlers are units with giant fans responsible for the heating and cooling of the building. The problem with the unit had to do with the phasing of its electricity.

"We shut down the unit and let the building air out," Baker said.

South Elementary opened as scheduled today with no issues.
