The New Canaan fire marshal's office is offering residents courtesy home inspections to review important safety tips.

Every year, thousands of people die in fires throughout the U.S. and more than 80 percent of them die in their homes, according to a release from New Canaan Fire Marshal Fred Baker. Recently, there were been two fatal fires in Connecticut, in single-family homes, that claimed the lives of five people.

In the home inspection, fire officers will review:

smoke and carbon monoxide detector placement

safe ash disposal

fire extinguishers

escape plans

extension cord use

flammable and combustible fuel storage

proper handling of a cooking fire

The service is free and no citations will be issued.
