The PEO Chapter N Program for Continuing Education recently presented the Karen Erdman Scholarship for Math and Science to Abeer Abu Issa, a resident of New Canaan.

Abeer Abu Issaa, a mother of three, is a full-time student at Bridgeport University, working toward a bachelor's degree in accounting. She plans to graduate in May.

New Canaan's PEO Chapter N has raised more than $175,000 for PEO projects over the past 50 years through fundraising efforts. PEO is an international philanthropic education organization, which supports women in attaining higher education.

The Program for Continuing Education is one of six philanthropic projects; this project provides grants of up to $3,000 to women who have found it necessary to return to school and who are within two years of attaining their degree.

Candidates need not be residents of New Canaan, but are required to have U.S. citizenship.

The other projects include the PEO Educational Loan Fund, a revolving loan fund; Cottey College, a fully accredited liberal arts college; the PEO International Peace Scholarship Fund, provides scholarships for international students to pursue graduate study in the United States and Canada; Star Scholarship, awarded to outstanding high school women seniors; PEO Scholar Awards, provides substantial awards to women of the U.S. and Canada who are pursuing advanced degrees or are engaged in advanced study and research at an accredited institution.
