A $6,000 diamond earring went missing after a New Canaan resident left his car unlocked at the lumberyard parking lot Aug. 26, according to police.

The 43-year-old complainant parked his car at the lot at about 9:30 a.m. and left the key inside so that an employee from New Canaan Car Spa, 25 Cross St., could pick it up for a detailed wash, police said.

The victim returned to his car at about 3 p.m. and noticed that one of two one-karat diamond earrings his wife had left in the cup holder was gone, according to the report. Police said the man searched for the earring several times and spoke to the car wash staff, who sifted through all vacuums and filters, but he still hasn't found it.
