Cyber safety addressed at community-wide event
Katie Koestner, a national expert on student safety and adolescent/teen relationship culture, will discuss concerns about the responsibilities and technical knowledge required to skillfully parent the cyber generation at a program hosted by New Canaan CARES.
Koestner has spoken on more than 50 national television shows and 1,700 college and school campuses throughout the course of her career. Her insight is based upon research collected from social media companies, the FBI and more than 800 schools nationwide.
The sessions will allow parents to bolster their technical knowledge; update them on the latest games, sites, privacy issues and controls; and manage the risks associated with the cyber generation.
Each discussion will address a broad range of topics, including a digital footprint; how to manage use/overuse; the pros and cons of the latest games, sites and parental controls; how colleges and employers use social media to evaluate teens; the legal risks and issues surrounding a child's Internet use; liability and up-to-date information about current trends in sexting, Instagram, wikis; and iChat.
