A driver and two passengers were caught with marijuana during a traffic stop in New Canaan last Friday afternoon, according to police.

An officer who was operating a radar monitor on South Avenue, near Surrey Road, about 12:45 p.m. observed a vehicle traveling south on South Avenue. After checking the vehicle's license plate number, the officer determined the registration expired in November 2013, police said.

The 1999 Dodge van was stopped near White Birch Road, where the officer detected an odor of marijuana, according to the report. Both the driver, Emmanuel Venegas, and one of the passengers, Naiym Waters, admitted to having marijuana, police said.

While searching the vehicle, police located more marijuana in a purse that belonged to the other passenger, Candyce McCalla, who also had a marijuana grinder, according to police.

Venegas, 24, of Bobwhite Drive, Norwalk, was issued a misdemeanor summons for operating an unregistered vehicle and operating under suspension. He is scheduled to appear in court Dec. 22.

Waters, 25, of Lawrence Street, Norwalk, and McCalla, 22, of Park Hill Avenue, Norwalk, were each issued an infraction for possession of less than half an ounce of marijuana. McCalla also was issued an infraction for possession of drug paraphernalia
