To be an honorary member, one must show outstanding service to New Canaan Fire and town residents, fire officials said. Brown assisted with the addition of dry hydrants throughout New Canaan.
"With most of New Canaan not protected by fire hydrants, having other reliable sources of water is critical. These help the Fire Department protect life and property by reducing the time it takes to deliver enough water to attack a large fire," Chief Edward Karl said.
Dry hydrants eliminate the ineffectiveness of long-distance water shuttle operations. They can provide a simple, cost-effective solution for rapid access to water sources, fire officials said. A dry hydrant is an arrangement of pipe with one end in the water and the other end on dry land that is available for connection to a pumper.
