Dr. Michael Lagas, who has been director of finance and operations for 15 years, is set to retire at the end of the 2010-2011 school year.

David Abbey, superintendent of New Canaan Public School, announced Lagas' retirement "with great reluctance" Wednesday morning through a press release.

Regarding his commitment to his post, Abbey said, "Dr. Lagas has focused on students first and foremost. When making a decision he always asked whether it was in the best interest of children.

He has managed school system budgets with great care, consistently recognizing that his goal was to be efficient while ensuring that New Canaan always had the resources to provide an outstanding educational experience for its children."

He also commented on Lagas' professionalism and dedication to a smooth transition to the next phase.

"It is a measure of Mike's professionalism and dedication that he has already begun working with our leadership team to ensure that the district continues to move forward as it transitions to a new director of finance and operations."

As of now, there is no information regarding the retirement process or Lagas' replacement.
