NEW CANAAN — Six people reported seeing a black bear wandering around town.

According to Animal Control Officer Allyson Halm, the bear was spotted on the morning of May 18 in the area of Benedict Hill Road. Sightings were also reported on Evergreen Road, Knollwood Lane and Rocky Brook Road. The bear was spotted in backyards, going through garbage and bird feeders.

Halm advised residents to take in bird feeders and secure garbage to avoid attracting bears.

She also said bears can be warded off with coyote hazing methods, like scaring them off by banging pots and pans or using an air horn.

Bears have been also spotted in the past week in New Milford and Shelton.
