Beth Marie Reifers joins Getabout board
Long-time New Canaan resident Beth Marie Reifers has joined the Board of Directors of Getabout, the van-based transportation service for New Canaan's seniors and special needs citizens.
"We are delighted to welcome Beth to our Board, especially in light of her extensive experience in charitable work, including her many years of direct involvement with seniors., said Getabout Board President Bob Witt. "We are already benefiting from her skills and energy -- as she brings new ideas in fundraising and communications to our organization, now in its 30th year."
A three-decade New Canaan resident, Reifers is an interior designer active in New Canaan and surrounding communities. Now head of her own firm, she was formerly associated with Jeffries Morris Inc., in New York, a real estate developer and property manager. She is a 15-year board member of the Carter Burden Center for the Aging in New York, now serving on its executive committee. She also formerly served on the board of the New York Junior League as communications manager, co-chaired several of their fundraisers in the city and was named one of their outstanding volunteer honorees.
"In view of Getabout's many thousands of rides annually, and the vans and mini-vans that you see all over town, it struck me that this exceptional organization is a unique New Canaan asset," she said. "The support it provides so many of our town neighbors -- whether seniors or other homebound residents -- helps them maintain active, high-quality lives despite not having the transportation so many of us take for granted. I am very excited to be helping the Getabout team in this very important community mission."
Getabout is a public-private partnership providing on-call van-based transportation to New Canaan residents on a day-in-advance reservation basis. With a fleet of two wheelchair-accessible multi-passenger vans and two mini-vans, Getabout provides some 10,000 individual rides to area residents each year at a flat one-way rate of $3 within New Canaan. Although funded in part by the Town of New Canaan and the New Canaan Community Foundation, Getabout, a 501C charitable organization, relies primarily on private contributions to defray the actual $16 cost of each ride -- and over $30 to neighboring towns -- costs that have been rising sharply in recent years.
Getabout also offers no-fee non-emergency rides, with 24-hour advance reservations, to medical offices in New Canaan and now to hospital and medical offices in Stamford, Norwalk, Darien and Wilton -- at no fee. Transportation is available Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.. Information on the service and reservations are available at 203-972-RIDE.
