Additional charges filed against man charged in New Canaan accident
The man arrested in September after hitting a 44-year-old Darien woman with his van is now facing additional charges.
According to New Canaan Police, Daniel J. DeRosa, 26, of Norwalk, was arrested Jan. 31 on further charges stemming from the Sept. 9 motor vehicle accident in which police said he struck and injured Carol Venezia of Darien.
Police said Venezia sustained an injury to her leg and a serious injury to her foot. Specifically, she had several fractures in her foot. Police Sgt. Carol Ogrinc said DeRosa was driving a van northbound on South Avenue when another vehicle was attempting to make a right turn from Bank Street. The van, which is owned by the pool company DeRosa worked for, struck the vehicle and then lost control, hitting a street sign and then the woman, Ogrinc said. Venezia's son and husband were also walking with her but neither was injured, Ogrinc said.
Ogrinc said that due to the serious nature of Venizia's injuries, police consulted with the State Attorney's office and received an additional warrant.
DeRosa was originally charged with operating a vehicle under the influence of drugs, possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia. He has since been charged with second-degree assault with a motor vehicle, reckless driving and operating a motor vehicle without a license.
Police said he posted a $30,000 and is scheduled to appear in court Feb. 10.
