ADHD expert to offer strategies for coping with disorders
Smart Kids with Learning Disabilities announces a free program featuring nationally recognized ADHD expert, Dr. Alan Wachtel who will discuss strategies, medication options and treatments for children who struggle with mood and attention disorders. The program will take place at Darien Library from 7 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 19.
Wachtel will discuss new advances in the treatment of mood and attention disorders. Research has shown that parents and teachers need to foster a child's focus and executive functioning skills to maximize a child's ability to learn. In addition, many children with LD also experience anxiety and depression, which affects learning and focus.
Wachtel will discuss the integration of behavioral strategies and pharmacological approaches in the treatment of attention and mood disorders. In addition, he will address the benefits and risks of various treatments and decisions on when to commence or postpone treatment at various stages of a child's life.
Wachtel is a board certified psychiatrist and the founder and director of Familyhealth Associates, a multidisciplinary private group practice specializing in the diagnosis and treatment of attention, behavior, learning, and mood disorders. He is the president of the Foundation for Family Health Studies, a nonprofit foundation dedicated to public education and research. Wachtel is a clinical associate professor of psychiatry at New York University School of Medicine, and is a Distinguished Life Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association.
Wachtel is a graduate of Mt. Sinai School of Medicine, where he also completed his psychiatric residency. He was a fellow at Cornell Medical Center, New York Hospital and completed postdoctoral training at the Ackerman Institute for Family Therapy in New York City.
Wachtel has been designated as one of New York Metro area's top doctors by Castle Connolly, and named best physician by the New York Times Magazine. He has been certified by the Consumers' Research Council of America as one of America's top psychiatrists in the area of pharmacology of mood and attention disorders. He lectures throughout the country on the pharmacological treatment of Attention Deficit Disorder. Wachtel is the author of "The Attention Deficit Answer Book."
