The New Canaan Branch of American Association of University Women will hold its traditional holiday brunch and tea Thursday, Dec. 9, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Waveny Inn.

This event will feature music by the well-known Schubert Club of Fairfield County. This non-profit, all-volunteer organization, now one of the two largest in Connecticut, promotes musical artistry among thousands of music lovers throughout the county each year.

The club was formed 100 years ago in 1910 in Stamford for the personal enjoyment of the 30 or so original members. When the founder of the Club (Mrs. Frederick Schuyler Wardwell) was asked why the club was named in honor of Schubert, she said that Schubert was always so happy and she wanted this to be a happy club. The club was then incorporated as the Schubert Club of Stamford in 1924; in 1970, to reflect its broader membership, the group became the Schubert Club of Fairfield County and is an independent musical organization. The Schubert Club Chorale is part of this organization, presenting programs to area churches, senior centers, assisted living facilities and civic groups.

Each year the Chorale presents a Christmas program as well as a spring program. Miriam Orr is the director and accompanist of the Chorale which is comprised of eight performers, including flutist and vocal soloist. The Christmas program this year will consist of carols from around the world.

This event is open to all members and their guests. Call Barbara Davies at 203-966-2923 to rsvp. Members are also invited to bring a contribution to the New Canaan Food Pantry.
