To the editor,

Thank you to the New Canaan League of Women Voters and the New Canaan Historical Society for hosting their recent Barn Tour, "Historic Barns, Yesterday and Today."

This was a unique, one-of-a-kind opportunity to learn about New Canaan's history with and connection to historic barns, which were once a regular facet of rural farm life in our area.

The program was led by Kip Farrell, photographer and expert on historic barns, and Judy Larsen, local preservation activist and expert. Farrell and Larsen spoke about the history of barns in our area, drawing on their extensive research and experience from their successful efforts to save New Canaan's barns.

Historical Society executive director Janet Lindstrom explained how local legislation has made it appealing for homeowners to preserve barns, even as they update them for today's lifestyles.

Our group then departed to view many barns, but specifically to visit four historically important barns in our area.

The Historic Barns exhibit, along with Kip Farrell's photographs, will be on display at the Historical Society for a short time. For information: or 203-966-1776.

Special thanks go out to the co-chairs of the event Gaby Beecher and Miki Porta, Board Members of the League of Women Voters of New Canaan, and the very generous residents who allowed us all to visit their beautiful barns.
