BRIDGEPORT -- The No. 1 Fairfield Prep boys hockey team cruised to a 7-0 victory over No. 8 Hamden on Saturday at Webster Bank Arena, moving to 13-0 on the season. Dean Lockery and Nick Bargiello each scored two goals for the Jesuits as Prep, the top-ranked team in the state media poll, outshot the Green Dragons 26-12 despite Hamden's control of the puck early on.

Jesuits coach Matt Sather said the slow start was a little troublesome, but he was happy with how the team responded.

"I thought they (Hamden) had more energy at the start of the game and that was disappointing," Sather said. "But it felt like once we got into the rhythm, we did a nice job moving the puck today and did a nice job getting the puck to the net."

Sather said the game was closer than the score indicated.

"I certainly don't think it was a 7-0 game," he said. "I think it was much closer than that but we'll take it."

Lockery was key in the Jesuits' jumping out ahead early, breaking through to score two of Fairfield Prep's first three goals, both on power plays. He also had the assist on Prep's second goal scored by Kenny Kochiss.

"My line has been doing pretty good on the power play," he said. "And on my first goal, all we did at practice was practice that back-door pass on the power play. My second goal, I just was able to get by the defender and I saw top left open and let it go."

Sather was surprised to see Lockery jumpstart the Jesuits' offense.

"He's a high energy player that we look to for that," he said. "He gave us a boost."

The game was blown open in the second and third periods when Prep scored five goals and outshot Hamden 17-5 behind their defense and the net keeping of Matt Beck (12 saves).

"Matty played great, especially in that first period," Sather said. "We were sluggish, no question about it and Hamden was energized, so we needed a couple huge saves from Matt. Our defensemen did a nice job in transition and they were aggressive when we needed them to be."

Prep travels to North Haven on Wednesday.
