Stephen Schwartz, Broadway and Disney star composer/lyricist, will perform a benefit concert of his hit songs for Summer Theatre of New Canaan on Friday, March 5, in New Canaan.

Schwartz, winner of three Academy Awards, four Grammy Awards and four Drama Desk Awards for his Broadway Musical and Disney film scores and lyrics, will present Stephen Schwartz and Friends -- Defying Gravity. To be staged at New Canaan Country School Theater, he will perform and accompany songs from his string of hit shows, Wicked, Pippin, Godspell, Working, Children of Eden, and Disney movies Pocahontas and The Hunchback of Notre Dame.

Also featured are Broadway Tony Award winning musical actress Debbie Gravitte and Broadway actor and award winning cabaret singer Scott Coulter. Melody Libonati, artistic director for Summer Theatre of New Canaan, said, "We are so lucky to have Stephen share his talents to support our growing regional theater company. He is an Icon in the musical theater world of Broadway music," she said. "This evening is a must for anyone who loves today's musical theater. Most of us have grown up hearing his music and have seen or performed in his shows."

The concert will feature a post-show reception and a live auction to help finance STONC's 2010 season. The benefit committee organizing the evening includes Kimberlee Demers, Allison Gray, Emilie Hannon, Kathy Klingenstein, Mariko LeBaron, Melody Libonati, Margaret Meyerson, Cathy Mishkin, Patricia Oxman, Meg Petersen, Liza Pohle, Priscilla Potenza, Ellen Sisson, Jodi Stiffelman, Pat Timberlake and Caroline Turpin. The live auction items will include exotic vacation homes, Broadway show packages with backstage tours and other fun and difficult to get items. The auction items will be listed on the Summer Theater website one week prior to the event for review and bidding. Stephen Schwartz will also be signing his biography "Defying Gravity" written by Carol de Giere.

Gravitte, a resident of Ridgefield Connecticut, regularly performs across the country with Schwartz and Coulter. Coulter resides in New York City and is the music director at the Unity Center in Norwalk. Schwartz's currently running Broadway show, Wicked, continually breaks box office records for weekly attendance and revenue.

The Summer Theatre of New Canaan is a professional 501c non-profit theater company located at 237 Elm Street in New Canaan. This will be their seventh season. The summer performances are held at Waveny Park, New Canaan mid June through early August. Professional productions of Shakespeare, Family Musicals and a Theatre for a Young Audience are performed under a large open-air tent.
