Silvermine Galleries' Juried Student Exhibition winners announced

There was a large turnout for the opening reception and awards ceremony for the 20th annual Juried Student Exhibition of the Silvermine School of Art in New Canaan, with more than 250 attendees.
The event took place Sunday, June 27, with the awards presented by School Director, Anne Connell. "This is a wonderful opportunity for everyone to share in recognizing the hard work and achievements of each of the award winners. This juried exhibition is open to all students of the School and for all ages, from youth to adult." The Student Exhibition is on view through July 29, in the Silvermine Gallery. This year's juror was Michael Torlen, a painter and Associate Professor of Visual Art in the School of Art+Design at Purchase College in New York.
The Best in Show was awarded to Janet Dilenschneider of Darien for her mixed media and pastel titled "A Birch & Pine in a Whiteout." In the Youth Category, ages 11 to 17, the Best in Show went to 14-year-old Ryan Crudgington of Fairfield for her charcoal entitled "Ezra Plantain." And for the 5 to 10 age group, 7-year-old Camden Archambeau from Weston won Best in Show for his mixed media work titled "Carnegie Hall -- My Cello and I."
Adult first prizes were awarded as follows: Painting -- Gayle Gleckler from North Salem, NY for "Star in Stripes;" Sculpture -- B.A. D'Alessandro from White Plains, NY for "Running Through;" Ceramics -- Rosalind Shaffer from Weston for "Meditation;" Mixed Media -- Toby Michaels from Westport for "What Goes Around Comes Around;" Jewelry -- Margaret Brady from New Canaan for "Cuttlefish Bracelet;" Drawing -- Susan Frey from Stamford for "Underneath it All;" Photography -- Lois Dreyer from Stamford for "Untitled;" Sterling Watercolor -- Ellen Gordon from Stamford for "Fantastique;" Pastel -- Betty Ball from Rowayton for "Granny Smiths and Macs;" Silversmithing -- Elizabeth McGarry from Darien for "Forged Spoon;" Collage -- Terry Spring from New Canaan for "Nature is my Wall Paper;" Digital Imaging -- Joyce Grasso from Stamford for "Through Rose Colored Glasses;" Printmaking-- Helen Gore from Redding for "Museé D'Orsay;" Oil Painting Award -- Karen Martin from Chappaqua, NY for "Lee in Red," and Watercolor Award -- Scott Kuykendall from Norwalk for "Manly Footwear." The Rio Grande Jewelry Award went to Pablo Sevilla from Trumbull for her Silver and Citrin work "Untitled," and the Windsor and Newton Watercolor Award went to Margie Collora from Ridgefield.
Adult Honorable mentions were also given to: Laure Kaplan from Westport for her ceramics/raku "Perfect Imperfections;" Lynda Lyons from Sleepy Hollow, N.Y., for her monotype collage "Healing;" Pippa Bell Ader from Westport for her ceramics "Bound Vase;" Anne Marie Tetelman from South Salem, NY for her drawing "Fish;" Susan Stone from New Canaan for her digital photography "Nada's Chair;" Kathleen Dunn from Stratford for her jewelry "Student;" Betty Schneider from Wilton for her mixed media "Study Abroad;" Bert Fried from Westport for his painting "Untitled;" Maggie Oland from Pound Ridge, N.Y., for her painting "Bedford Tree;" Cynthia Mullins from Ridgefield for her painting "Big Cloud #3;" Pierre Lahaussois from Rowayton for photography "Medieval Egg;" Helen Werngren from Westport for printmaking "Om;" Sarah Meyerhoff from Greenwich for her painting "Chama River at Dawn;" Peggy Stutts-Clark from Fairfield for her painting "Andy's Beemer;" Karen Borgia from Westport for her mixed media "Germination;" and Ginny Awn from Norwalk for her sculpture "Yang/Ying."
In the Youth group, ages 11 to 17, First Prizes were awarded in the following categories: Painting -- Madeline Jackson from Norwalk for "Betty;" Drawing -- Aaron Friedman from Wilton for "Sargessum Fish;" Photography -- Sofi Geismar from Trumbull for "Crystal Clear;" Printmaking -- Michelle Arlott from Stamford for "Forest Fire;" Ceramics -- Isabel Glatthorn from New Canaan for "Twisted Bowl;" Jewelry -- Darby Searl from Westport for "Darby's Cuff Bracelet;" Digital Imaging- Cole DeBeradinia from Darien for "untitled;" Sculpture -- Liam Fratturo from Norwalk for "Crabtankerous;" Cynthia Mullins Award -- Margalit Cutler from Wilton for her charcoal work "Betty;" Sterling Award -- Josette Marcario from Norwalk for her oil "Peaceful Pond;" and T.S. Hyon Award -- Sarah Peck from Redding for her photograph "Fallen Star."
Honorable Mentions were also presented to: Maya Ponzini from Stamford in Ceramics for "House of United Leaves;" Olivia Shiller from Wilton and Max Paschke from Fairfield in Drawing for "Self-Portrait" and "Untitled" respectively; Amanda Googe from Westport in Painting for "Lady;" Megan Caulfield from Dariet in Photography for "Untitled;" and Frannie Logan from Wilton in Jewelry for "Peg Ring."

The Silvermine School of Art offers courses for all ages and levels of ability. An Open House for the Fall Semester will be held on Sunday, Aug. 29, from 2 to 4 p.m. Registration for the Fall Semester begins August 9th and courses start on Sept.15.
