The fourth annual New Canaan One Mile Road Race took place Saturday and raised funds for a pair of scholarships for New Canaan High School cross country and track athletes.

Sponsors of the race this year included New Balance of New Canaan, KARL Chevrolet, Joe's Pizza, Rosie and Walter Stewart's Market.

The USATF certified course featured three laps through downtown New Canaan. Separate races were held for men and women (heats went off every 10 minutes), followed by a health walk and kids fun run.

Prizes for the fastest New Canaan male and female, as well as male and female age group prizes were awarded.

"It's a fun evening for the entire family," Ron Rosenfeld, owner of the local New Balance store, said.

"KARL Chevrolet joins New Balance in underwriting the race again this year, along with another one Aug. 26 that benefits `All Out for Autism,' because these events highlight health, family fitness and community," said Steve Karl, vice president of KARL Chevrolet.

"We've been involved since the beginning, and we love the way this June event has grown in popularity each year. It also brings a lot of people to the downtown area, which is great for New Canaan."

As in previous years, this June's race benefited two college scholarships for graduating New Canaan High School seniors who demonstrated an outstanding work ethic in the school's cross country/track program.

The cross country and indoor/outdoor track coaches selected recipients. In 2010, Peter Park and Ashley Frangione each received a $500 scholarship.

This year's award winners will be announced at the athletic awards banquet.
