A pedestrian was struck and killed by a car near the Posey Tube in Oakland Wednesday night, officials said.
Oakland Police responded to the incident just before 11 p.m. The pedestrian — a man whose name was not immediately released — was struck in the 700 block of Harrison Street, near where traffic emerges from the tube, which crosses under the Oakland Estuary from Alameda.
The car that hit the man was headed northeast on the Harrison Street, about three-quarters of a mile from the Posey Tube, when he hit the man, police said. It was not immediately clear if the pedestrian was walking in a crosswalk when the car struck him.
The man was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver, whose name was not released, stopped and was cooperating police.
Police investigating the incident said alcohol or drugs do not appear to be involved. “It does appear that speed was a factor,” police said in a statement.
