New Canaan High School's girls' basketball team began Class L State Tournament action with a win on Monday night. The No. 6 Rams hosted and defeated No. 27 Middletown 71-41 to advance to Thursday's second-round clash with No. 11 RHAM (at home at 7 p.m.).

The Rams led just 18-16 after one quarter but pulled away behind four players in double figures. Courtney Rogers led the way with 19 points, Melissa Tweed scored 16, Christina Loop dropped in 13 and Raquel Roganti added 12. Sarah Mannelly added nine points to go along with nine assists, four steals, four rebounds and three blocks. The Rams hit eight 3-pointers, including five by Loop.
