Eighty-nine rowers from boathouse partners New Canaan crew, Maritime Rowing Club and St. Luke's crew traveled to Philadelphia last weekend to compete in the 2.5-mile Thomas Eakins Head of the Schuylkill Regatta on Saturday. They returned home with four gold and two bronze medals from the nine events they entered. Competitors raced against the clock and faced almost continuous drenching rain on Saturday, but proved they could put any hardship aside. Almost 700 rowers came from all over the New England and mid-Atlantic states to compete along Boathouse Row.

Local rowers dominated the men's single sculls, the largest event of the day with 42 entries. New Canaan and Maritime scullers shined, taking both gold (Andrew Campbell) and bronze (Charlie Kelly) medals, plus four more of the top 10 places.

In the women's single sculls, Maritime again took gold (Marianne Hoeft), with local rowers seizing three more spots in the top 10. In the men's quadruple sculls, the team of Thatcher Dodge, Henry Franco, Ryan Hanavan and Nick Howard brought the bronze medal home by taking third in a field of 30 boats.

Other commendable finishes for local crews were the fifth-place performance by the NCHS A entry and a 19th-place finish

for the novice NCHS B boat in the women's non-varsity/lower boats eights, out of 29 entries. Most rowers in the B boat first pulled on an oar less than two months ago.

In the women's double sculls, a young St. Luke's duo put on a great fight for 10th place of 25 entries, followed closely by NCHS, who finished 12th.

Maritime Rowing Club's sweep women's program, coached by Liz Trond, is becoming a dominant force on the national scene. After winning the Head of the Charles two weekends ago, Trond's first eight (with New Canaanite Paige Gonye) dominated the Schuylkill, taking first of 36 entries, with her second eight (with New Canaanite Abby Stevenson) placing ninth. The Maritime women's high school four also took home gold, out of 40 entries, adding a distinct glow to an otherwise rainy day.
