The Greenwich High School wrestling team went 3-0 at the Chaco Duals Saturday at Staples High School, defeating Fairfield Prep, Newtown and Haddam-Killingworth.

The Cardinals (13-7) beat Fairfield Prep, 62-13, before edging Newtown, 40-37, and Haddam-Killingworth, 36-35.

Mark Chien went 3-0 for Greenwich in the 106-pound class, pinning all three of his opponents. Mike Gestal won his 170-pound match against Fairfield Prep by technical fall, then wrestled at 160 pounds against Newtown and won by pinfall in 31 seconds. Grant Cucchissi (182) was 2-1 for the Cardinals with two pins. Jack Benenson (120) and Alex Margeotes also went 2-1 on the day for the Cards. With Greenwich trailing Newtown by two points, Benenson pinned Ryan King in 2:37, giving the Cardinals the victory.

Erick Tack was 2-0 in the 152-pound class, while heavyweight Chris Fischer won both of matches by pinfall. Fischer needed just 37 seconds to win his matches. The Cardinals will travel to Danbury on Tuesday.

BRUNSWICK 57, CHASE COLLEGIATE 15: The Bruins took a 48-0 lead after nine matches en route to recording another WNEISWA victory. Griffin Thomas (145) gave the Bruins a 4-2 overtime win one of the most competitive matches of the day. Jimmy Bell won a 12-5 decision against his Chase opponent.

BRUNSWICK 45, HOTCHKISS 25: Trailing 19-0, Brunswick rallied for the win. Jack Jones won his match by major decision, Owen Schubert took his match by pinfall and Evan Jonokuchi won his 138-pound match by decision for the Bruins. Thomas' 3-1 win clinched the match for Brunswick. Senior tri-captain Petey Briggs (138) will miss the remainder of the season after sustaining a shoulder injury in the Bruins win against Greenwich High on Thursday.

The Bruins will close out their dual meet season with a home match against Trinity Pawling on Tuesday.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

A big game from center Galen Hughes lifted Greenwich Academy to a 55-36 win over host Hopkins School on Saturday.

Hughes scored 21 points for the Gators, who led 27-16 at halftime. Kelly Bojic had 13 points, while Victoria Hannover added 10 points for the GA (3-11).

Megan Root contributed seven points for the Gators, who will host Greens Farms Academy on Monday.

CONVENT OF THE SACRED HEART 62, CHASE COLLEGIATE 35: Center Emily O'Sullivan scored 14 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to power the Tigers, who used their size to their advantage.

"Chase was extremely well coached and had decent shooters, but they only had seven players around 5'6," CSH coach Sean Green said. "Fortunately in the first half we were hitting our shots."

Claire O'Neill recorded 10 points and seven rebounds, while Kayla Souza had nine points and pulled down five rebounds. The Tigers will be in action again Monday on the road against FAA foe School of the Holy Child.

GIRLS SWIMMING

Greenwich Academy improved to 5-1 on the season, defeating host Hamden Hall, 89-67.

The Gators were paced by Kitty Arenz and Hannah Goodrick, who won two individual events apiece. Arenz finished first in the 100-yard backstroke and 200 individual medley. Goodrick touched the wall first in the 50 freestyle and 100 freestyle. Up next for the Gators is a meet on the road against Ethel Walker School on Saturday.

BOYS ICE HOCKEY

Greenwich High School dropped a 3-0 decision to rival New Canaan in an FCIAC game held at Darien Ice Rink Saturday night.

At 7-6, the Cardinals need one win in their last six games to qualify for the state tournament. The Cardinals are currently tied for fourth place in the FCIAC with a conference record of 4-3.

"We competed hard tonight and played pretty well," GHS coach Bob Russel said. "We just couldn't generate enough offense."

The Rams (11-6, 6-1 FCIAC) scored a goal in each period. Forward Harry Stanton scored the game's first goal 2:53 into the first period. Peter Reinhardt gave the Rams a 2-0 lead at the 11:46 mark of the second period. Luke Amero capped the scoring for New Canaan in the third period.

"They were on the power play six times and we didn't allow a power play goal, so we did well in that area," Russel said. "We created some chances, but we had trouble finishing, which is what happens at times when you have a young team. I can't fault our effort."

Greenwich, which received solid play from goalie Bryan Archino, Reed Brady, Paul Macken and Luke Finneran, will visit Rye Country Day School Monday before hosting St. Joseph on Tuesday.
