Rays option Curt Casali down from MLB roster

After 23 games played at the Major League level, New Canaan native Curt Casali was optioned down from the Tampa Bay Rays roster Tuesday in a corresponding move with the activation of starting catcher Ryan Hanigan. Casali will spend the reaminder of the week with the Rays' Class A Advanced affiliate, the Charlotte Stone Crabs, before returning to Tampa Bay on September 1, when MLB rosters expand to 40 players. Casali made his Major League debut on July 18, after Hanigan had been placed on the disabled list.

In 69 plate appearances since that day, Casali hit .169 with zero home runs, two RBIs, eight runs scored and five walks. He threw out 25 percent of opposing runners from behind the plate.
