NEW CANAAN — Depth is a luxury that high school sports coach craves for.

The New Canaan High School field hockey squad is in just that position. Head coach Erin Gildea can bring fresh players in waves against opponents.

And that advantage showed Tuesday as the Rams defeated Ridgefield, 4-2, before a home crowd at Dunning Stadium.

Ridgefield (0-2) received six saves in net from goalie Elizabeth Kaiser and put pressure on New Canaan’s defense with eight penalty corners.

Ridgefield forward Rebekah Silver leads a core of eight seniors for the Tigers, who were eliminated in the Class L first round by Staples.

“I thought we played an excellent game in defeat,” Ridgefield coach Colleen Cannon said. “We played hard. We played strong. Because New Canaan is so well-coached and has so much depth, whatever we did they adjusted to it. It is still very early in the season. I think my team will learn a lot from this contest.”
