NEW CANAAN — New Canaan’s Peter Swindell had more success in a five-minute stretch in the first quarter catching the football than many wide receivers have in an entire season.

After hauling in a pair of touchdowns in the season-opener against Ridgefield, Swindell did one better Saturday, catching three in the Rams’ opening three possessions to jumpstart another rout.

New Canaan kept its high-flying offense rolling by cruising past Bridgeport Central 53-8 in a one-sided matchup at Dunning Field.

“(Swindell) came out and I don’t think he understood how good of a football player he could be,” said Rams coach Lou Marinelli, who delivered a positive message to the Central players following the game before going to his team. “He got hurt last year which certainly hurt him. He’s one of our best receivers and he’s done a great job running precision routs and his hands are tremendous.”

Rams quarterback Michael Collins threw five touchdowns, completing 10-of-11 passes in the opening half to lead New Canaan to a 46-0 advantage at the break. Running back Matt Cognetta had over 100 yards rushing and a pair of touchdowns for the Rams.

Ryan O’Connell (40 yards) and Andrew Jahns (66) caught long touchdown passes from Collins in the second quarter.

The game was played almost entirely in Bridgeport Central’s half in the opening 24 minutes. The Hilltoppers, who were coming off a 34-14 win over Bassick last week, got their first first down on their last drive of the first half.

“When you start from the 20 all the time it just put us in good positions to take advantage,” Marinelli said. “But I think (Central’s) coaches and players did a tremendous job fighting until the very end.”

As the 50-point rule loomed over the second half, Central had some success against the New Canaan reserves. Markens Raphael scored on a short touchdown run to get the Hilltoppers on the board after a Rams fumble at midfield.

“We got beat by a much better team,” Central coach Michael Farrell said. “I thought for the most part the effort was there and we competed, but they were just on another level. We just have to keep going and keep improving.”
