On the Market: Quiet in a family-friendly New Canaan neighborhood

NEW CANAAN — Hoyt Farm Road is not a cul-de-sac and yet it is not a well-traveled roadway. The only motorists who frequent this quiet neighborhood are those who live there.
It’s not uncommon to see many residents of this neighborhood walking and jogging, and children safely ride their bikes. Nextdoor.com reports that neighbors use the words pleasant, family-friendly, beautiful, peaceful, and dog-friendly to describe this half mile residential haven that loops around between Middle Ridge Road and Long Lots Road.
An opportunity to be part of this enclave exists at 452 Hoyt Farm Road, where the 4,764-square-foot colonial at that address is on the market. The cream colored clapboard house with white trim and black shutters was built in 1980 and sits on a two-acre level parcel, a corner lot created by a spur that accesses three other homes.
This location is convenient to downtown New Canaan and the train station in one direction and the Merritt Parkway in the opposite direction.
Enter the house from the side entrance near the three-car attached garage or from the formal covered front entrance, which opens into a foyer with a hardwood floor installed on a diagonal. A border of darker wood frames the foyer, which provides access to the formal living, the office, and the gourmet kitchen.

As in most houses today, most of the family members spend time in the family or great room, or in the case of this home in the sizable music room, which doubles as a sun room. That has left most living rooms obsolete. The owners of this house have repurposed the living room into a billiard room. It has a fireplace with a marble surround. Pocket doors with glass panes separate the living and dining rooms. The formal dining room has wainscoting on the lower walls and a café door into the kitchen.
In the kitchen there are teak wood countertops, white ceramic subway tile backsplash, a long center island topped in granite, a breakfast room with bay windows and a built-in window seat, and a built-in hutch. Some of the cabinetry has glass-front doors and interior lighting. High-end appliances include a Viking Professional six-burner range with griddle. One door of the refrigerator has a built-in chalk board for a grocery list or family messages. The center island contains a large sink and there is a second smaller sink on another counter. Its location near the entrance into the dining room and not far from the music room would allow it to serve as a wet bar for entertaining.
Between the kitchen and family room there is a mudroom with built-in cubbies with coat hooks and storage above and below each one. The family room has a cathedral ceiling, exposed beams, a floor-to-ceiling stone fireplace, and bay window. French doors separate it from the music room, which also has its own French doors; these lead to the patio, stone sitting wall and backyard.
