On the Market: New Canaan home strikes as spohisticated

NEW CANAAN — The level of detail suffused into the gray colonial house at 35 Charter Oak Lane is visible from the moment the property comes into view, and the owners had much to do with it although they are not in the construction or interior design professions.
They did their homework and their choices demonstrate a particular level of sophistication from the double covered front entrance to the types of woods selected to cover the floors to the finishing details of paneling and crown molding even in second floor spaces.
Incorporated into the house are subtle unifying features like the leaded bubble glass of the front door sidelights and transom, which is repeated in the glass doors of the kitchen cabinetry; the wrought iron railings on staircases in several parts of the house and in the decorative door of the wine cellar; and the dark granite of the wet bar, which is repeated in one of the kitchen counters.
And while it may seem contradictory, the sophisticated elegance of some living spaces is balanced with a casual sophistication of informal spaces like the outdoor “living room” off the family room and eat-in section of the kitchen. It has a stone fireplace, wood ceiling, and bluestone floor.
This 9,724-square-foot house has several disability/accessibility features including an elevator that goes to all four finished levels, wide halls, wider-than-usual doorways, and the three-car heated garage has a ramp into the house.

The clapboard, stone, and wood house was built in 2006 on a 2.08-acre level and sloping property located near the end of a cul-de-sac in a convenient area of New Canaan less than a mile from the Merritt Parkway and Waveny Park, and within an easy commutable distance to the Talmadge Hill Metro North train station.
Stone pillars mark the entrance to this gated and professionally landscaped property. The entrance to the house is marked by two covered areas with multiple sets of three columns. The front door resembles the type of door that would be found on a castle and it opens to the two-story foyer with curved walls and a curved solid oak staircase. The oak flooring is arranged in a herringbone pattern.
The door to the library has multiple panes of beveled glass. The floor and walls are cherry. The fireplace has a granite surround and is flanked by built-in bookshelves. In the living room there is a limestone fireplace and detailed molding topped with a keystone, which is repeated elsewhere.
