NEW CANAAN — The Star Spangled Banner hangs proudly between two of the six columns on the two-story covered front porch of the antique Federal colonial house at 208 Canoe Hill Road. This American flag bears 13 stripes honoring the 13 original colonies and 50 white stars in its field of blue, the current official flag.

When this house was built in 1863 there were only 35 stars. According to the website www.usflag.org “This Flag became the Official United States Flag on July 4th, 1863. A star was added for the admission of West Virginia (June 20th, 1863) and was to last for 2 years. The two Presidents to serve under this flag were Abraham Lincoln (1861-1865) and Andrew Johnson (1865-1869).”

When the current owners purchased the house in 2000 it was a tear-down waiting to happen. They lovingly renovated and restored this Canoe Hill landmark giving the 5,465-square-foot beige clapboard and stone house modern amenities for today’s lifestyle. It also received custom millwork, high end finishes, and intricate detailing. Many features were deliberately made to look old to fit with the home’s historic integrity but they are all new so it’s almost like a new house.

Access the property through one of two entrances into the semi-circular crushed stone driveway lined in Belgium block. A spur of the driveway travels to the back of the house where there is an attached, under house two-car garage. Enter the home through the door framed by decorative leaded glass sidelights and fanlight transom. Inside, there are with four floors of living space. The first floor has a remarkable feel with 9.5-foot ceilings and sun-filled rooms from large glass windows and doors. The foyer has decorative millwork and wainscoting on the lower walls.

An arched doorway topped with a keystone provides access to the formal living room, where there is a stone fireplace flanked by French doors onto the side covered porch. At the back of the living room is a wide doorway into a solarium with a red brick floor arranged in a herringbone pattern, three walls of windows and French doors to a large wood deck and terraced patios, which provide views of the three-acre property, heated in-ground swimming pool, spa, and beautiful gardens. In the formal dining room three sets of French doors lead out to the deck.

Between the dining room and kitchen there is a butler’s pantry with a double stainless sink, Carrera marble counters and glass-front cabinetry. The kitchen has the same marble counters as well as a recessed area of distressed red brick where the Viking Professional six-burner range with grill sits. The kitchen opens to the breakfast room where there is bead board on the lower walls and a Dutch door to a second deck. This part of the house also has an office or home command center. The pine-paneled library features a fireplace and a wall of built-in cabinetry and shelving.

The full, partially finished walk-out basement contains a custom, climate-controlled wine cellar and tasting room. It can accommodate about 2,000 bottles.

Outside, the pool is encircled by a stone wall and fencing. It addition to the pool there is a pergola and a built-in grill area. A formal garden is surrounded by a fieldstone wall. The property has many mature trees and a new grove of apple trees planted by the current owners.
