NEW CANAAN -- Henry C. Reid & Son, a jewelry store at 72 Elm St., was robbed mid-afternoon on Wednesday, Nov. 6, after someone took a sledgehammer to the front window, according to police.
Police said the robbery took place at approximately 4:03 p.m. and that no one was injured during the incident.
Police responded to the 911 call made just after 4 p.m. within a minute, but the suspects had fled the area already, making off with three Rolex watches valued at more than $50,000
The four suspects fled the area on foot from Elm Street, to South Avenue and then down Elm Court, police said. Stamford's K-9 unit responded to the incident, but the suspects' trail was lost on Park Street, where police believe the suspects fled in a car.
Lizzie MacGuire, 17, of New Canaan, who works in Togs next to Henry C. Reid, said she and another employee were cleaning in the front of the store when they saw a few men outside. MacGuire said she had seen the same men standing in the area a few days prior.
Just around 4 p.m., she heard "three big bangs" and then saw the men take off running toward J. Crew, one of whom was carrying a small sledgehammer.
MacGuire said the men wore work gloves and reached into the jewelry store window display.
"This was a brazen act, undoubtedly witnessed by numerous people," said Capt. Vincent DeMaio, in a press release.
Police ask that any witnesses to the burglary or anyone that may have video or pictures of the suspects contact New Canaan Police at 203-594-3500.
