SAO PAULO (AP) — Thousands of demonstrators flooded a square in Brazil's economic hub, Sao Paulo, on Tuesday evening for the latest in a historic wave of protests against the shoddy state of public transit, schools and other public services in this booming South American giant.

Sparked earlier this month by a 10-cent hike in bus and subway fares and organized via social media, the nationwide protests are giving voice to growing discontent over the gap between Brazil's high tax burden and the low quality of public infrastructure, echoing similar mobilizations in Turkey, Greece and other parts of the globe where weariness with governments has exploded in the streets.

On Tuesday, an estimated 50,000 people marched on Sao Paulo's City Hall building, where a small radical group clashed with police as they attempted to force their way in and set a vehicle and other objects alight.

After an estimated turnout of 240,000 people in 10 cities Monday, the protests are turning into the most significant in Brazil since the end of the country's 1964-85 military dictatorship, when crowds rallied to demand the return of democracy.

A cyber-attack knocked the government's official World Cup site offline, and the Twitter feed for Brazil's Anonymous hackers group posted links to a host of other government websites whose content had been replaced by a screen calling on citizens to come out to the streets.

Vandalism and violent clashes with police similarly marred the end of Monday's mostly peaceful march in Rio, which left the city's downtown stinking of tear gas.

President Dilma Rousseff, a former leftist guerrilla who was imprisoned and tortured during the dictatorship, hailed the protests, even though her government has been a prime target of demonstrators' frustrations.

The office of the United Nations' High Commissioner for Human rights said it "urged the Brazilian authorities today to exercise restraint in dealing with spreading social protests in the country and called on demonstrators not to resort to violence in pursuit of their demands."

The runner who captured three gold medals at the 2007 world championships.

See, he's always prided himself on the philosophy of "one more" — one more curve to hone his technique, one more burst out of the blocks, one more rep in the weight room.

Pain became a constant companion around the track.

Because that hip was more of an issue over the years than people realize.

The rejuvenation of Gay has certainly been noticed by his fellow sprinters.

[...] he's taken a back seat to Bolt — just like every other sprinter — as the powerful Jamaican has set world records (his mark stands at 9.58) and captured two straight Olympic 100-meter titles.

In my mind, it doesn't take away anything — he's tied for the second-fastest person to walk on earth.

Gay finished runner-up at trials last summer on a hip that bothered him so bad, he ran on grass during workouts to save some wear and tear.

The plan going forward is to keep sprinting until at least the 2016 Rio Games as Gay searches for that elusive individual Olympic medal.

Gay was supposed to challenge Bolt at the Beijing Games in 2008, but a severe hamstring injury hindered the University of Arkansas standout.
