The board of Getabout, New Canaan's van service for seniors and residents with transportation challenges, will award its "Bud Bowl" for meritorious service to longtime board member Robert Yates.
The Bud Bowl, named for the Getabout's late operations head Bud Rosenthal, will be awarded at the Getabout's fall fundraiser on Sunday, Oct. 21, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Country Club of New Canaan.
Yates is the longest-serving director of the Getabout, having joined the board in the early 1980s, shortly after it was founded by a group of New Canaan volunteers. A New Canaan resident for more than 40 years, he has served as the board's secretary for the past decade.
"Rob has been an outstanding board member for three decades now, a dedicated private and public servant in the truest sense of the word, an unflagging champion of our clients, and an inspiration to both our riders and our fellow board members," board President Bob Witt said.
The wine tasting and silent auction is Getabout's largest fundraising event, targeted to raise almost a third of the charitable organization's annual budget. The fundraiser is particularly important this year in light of the limited state support for Getabout's fast-growing Medi-Rides program, which provides free nonemergency trips to area medical facilities, and the cost of gasoline.
All Getabout management costs are borne by its volunteer board of directors. Getabout trips are available Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Reservations, on a minimum 24-hour advance basis, are available at 203-972-7433.
