Plans are underway for the New Canaan YMCA's 17th annual Golf Charity Outing Thursday, May 15, at the Country Club of Fairfield.

Proceeds benefit the YMCA Special Needs Initiative, which provides specialized and traditional programming for children, teens, and young adults with special needs.

Through the YSN, this past year, more than 100 children, teens and adults benefited from specialized and mainstream programming, employment and volunteer opportunities. In addition, the YMCA's Special Cares Camp program brings children with a variety of special needs into its mainstream summer camp programs, providing one-on-one aides at no additional cost to their families.

Last year, the Y dedicated more than $60,000 to provide support staff for YSN programs and camp, allowing these young people to participate in these programs at no additional cost.

New Canaan residents Chris Pohle and Rick Selvala are the co-chairmen.

"The YMCA golf outing is one of the more unique charity outings in the area," Selvala said. "Virtually every single individual who sponsors a foursome is a New Canaan resident, and whether they bring their friends or business acquaintances, the camaraderie among players is special."

Pohle added, "For 16 years, this event has supported an important cause. It's a really fun day at CCF, and I know that players and sponsors alike are delighted to help the Y deliver important programming to people with special needs. "

Judi Anders, parent of a child participating in the Y's Special Needs Initiative, said, "My son Will has low-functioning autism, is nonverbal, and medically challenged. The New Canaan YMCA has changed his life. For the last three years, Will has a place to go after school, and on the weekends to swim and play in the YSN classes, where he is accepted unconditionally."
