A Silvermine Road resident reported July 21 being a victim of a Craigslist scammer who took nearly $2,000 from her, according to New Canaan police.
The 19-year-old complainant said she recently saw an advertisement for employment in Craigslist.org's New York section, where the poster claimed to be looking for people "to help buy gifts to orphans," police said.
She responded to the post and two different people called her back from two separate phone numbers, according to the report.
A man claiming to be Brandon Manion called from a 513 area code number and a person claiming to be James Edward called her from a 661 area code number, police said.
They then sent her a $1,995 check and told her to buy MoneyPak reloadable gift cards, according to the report. Police said she deposited the check in her account via ATM, bought the cards with her own money and then texted them the serial numbers on the cards.
When she realized the check did not have any funds, she called police but the solicitors did not answer the phone, according to the report.
The case is under investigation.
