A 76-year-old shopkeeper at Sallea Antiques on Elm Street thwarted a thief on the afternoon of Saturday, Aug. 18, during the Pop-Up Park event, according to police.

Sarah Mitchell, 58, of Rye, N.Y., was charged with sixth-degree larceny after she was followed and confronted by the shopkeeper.

The shopkeeper said she noticed a crystal round box with a silver top valued at $200 missing from the store, and suspected a recent shopper, Mitchell, of taking it. She said she confronted Mitchell outside the store, and Mitchell returned the item. The shopkeeper then called police and followed Mitchell to her car, where they waited for the police.

When officers arrived, they noticed in plain view on the passenger floor area several items of clothing and a silver dish. Mitchell admitted to stealing them from White Plains, N.Y., stores earlier in the week, police reported.

Mitchell was released on a promise to appear in court Aug. 27.
