Can you spot Waldo? He'll be here in New Canaan.
The famous children's book character in the striped shirt and black-rimmed specs is visiting many local businesses in October, and those who spot him can win prizes, including stickers, book coupons and more.
From ice cream venues to shoe stores to lunch spots to gift shops, Waldo figures will be well hidden in more than 25 New Canaan business establishments. Find Waldo is a way for residents to shop local.
To get the names of the participating stores, shoppers can pick up a "Find Waldo in New Canaan!" passport at Elm Street Books, 35 Elm St. They can then get their passport stamped or signed at each shop where they spot Waldo.
The first 100 Waldo seekers to get their passports stamped or signed at 10 or more sites can bring them back to Elm Street Books to collect prizes. Collecting store stamps or signatures at 20 or more businesses will entitle diligent seekers to enter a grand-prize drawing on Oct. 26, with the top prize being a six-volume deluxe set of Waldo books.
"Where's Waldo" is the creation of Martin Handford, whose entertaining drawings of crowd scenes swept the world in 1987. There are now more than 58 million Waldo books in print worldwide and they've been translated into 18 languages. In celebration of Waldo's longevity and popularity, his American publisher, Candlewick Press, is teaming up with the American Booksellers Association and 265 independent bookstores across the country, for some hide and seek fun.
There is no charge to participate, and the hunt lasts from Oct. 1 to 25. For more information, call Elm Street Books at 203-966-4545.
