The U13 New Canaan girls Black soccer team rebounded from last week's season-opening home defeat with a dominant 3-0 shutout win at Fairfield.
Emma Smith opened the scoring at 20 minutes with a close finish from Chloe McAuliffe's short pass. McAuliffe doubled New Canaan's lead before the break with a well-composed strike off Danielle's MacKimm's long pass from near midfield.
Fairfield came out pressing to start the second half, but New Canaan soon took back control of the game and the outcome was never in question. Long sideline runs from Paulina Cortina, McAuliffe and Smith kept Fairfield in its end for much of the game.
Alana Tonghini's short tap in from a corner kick put the game out of reach with five minutes remaining.
Hailey Towbin, Annie and Allie Neugeboren, Tonghini, Samantha Hoey, Becca Walshin, Anne Johnston and Niki Orndahl played well in both midfield and striker roles. Abby and Nicole Weiss anchored a strong defense, which also included MacKimm, Katie Kennelly and Skylar Severance.
A strong midfield and defense limited Fairfield to only one or two weak shots on goal.
