The Town Players of New Canaan announce open auditions for "Amadeus" by Peter Shaffer and directed by Lynne Bolton, Tuesday and Wednesday, Sept. 6 and 7 at 7:30 p.m. at the Powerhouse Theatre, Waveny Park.
Production dates are Oct. 28, 29, Nov. 4, 5, 11 and 12 at 8 p.m. and Oct. 30 and Nov. 6 at 2:30 p.m.
"(The play is a) winner of a Tony Award for Best Play, the Academy Award for Best Film and triumphant in recent revivals in the West End and on Broadway, this provocative work weaves a confrontation between mediocrity and genius into a tale of breathtaking dramatic power," Bolton (who also directed "Agnes of God," "Driving Miss Daisy," "Mauritius," "Copenhagen" and "Arcadia") said. "In the court of the Austrian Emperor Josef, Antonio Salieri is the established composer.
"Enter the greatest musical genius of all time: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Salieri has given himself to God so that he might realize his sole ambition to be a great composer. Mozart is a foul-mouthed, graceless oaf who has that which is beyond Salieri's envious grasp: Genius."
