When Mark Twain wrote "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer" 137 years ago, he never could have known the sort of impact it would have on future generations. There is something universal in the boy he created, who was loosely based on himself as a child.
As New Canaan High School Theatre puts the final touches on the upcoming musical version of "Tom Sawyer," yet another generation will learn of Tom's antics -- and of his friend, Huckleberry, and his best girl, Becky.
"Tom Sawyer" will be performed at NCHS at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 25, and at 2 and 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 26.
The productions at the high school combine the talents and efforts of students, teachers and parents. The students not only act, sing and dance on stage, but they all work in various degrees on props, costumes and sets and help with stage managing, choreography, lighting and sound.
Sponsors for the show include April Kaynor Realty; Bankwell Financial Group; B.T. Bowler & Associates; Deluxe Cleaners; Divaz Salon; Garden Catering; Karl Chevrolet; New Canaan Dance Academy; New England Academy of Dance; Parker Ear, Nose & Throat; Performing Arts Conservatory of New Canaan; The Studio; and Walter Stewart's Market.
Before the Saturday matinee, theater-goers can enjoy Tom and Becky's Bayou BBQ. Tickets to the BBQ are $12. Tickets to the show are $15 and $18.
Tickets can be purchased at newcanaanhighschooltheatre.com or in the high school lobby, Thursday and Friday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. during show week and one hour prior to show times.
