Sophia Gevas, the director of outreach education for the New Canaan-based Silvermine Arts Center, was the judge for the Loft Artists Association's exhibition, "The Elements: Earth, Air, Fire and Water."

The show opens Friday, Sept. 12, at the Loft Artists' East Gallery, 575 Pacific St., Stamford, and continues through Oct. 19. An opening reception and awards ceremony takes place from 6 to 9 p.m. that day.

Using as its theme the four naturally occurring elements from which all other matter is made -- earth, air, fire and water -- the Loft Artists Association, of Stamford, has expanded its exhibition schedule with the inaugural tri-state area all-media juried show.

"This is a signature event for the LAA," LAA President Ellen Gordon said. "It represents another step in our growth and reputation, and we are delighted to welcome the artists from throughout Connecticut, New York and New Jersey who are participating in `The Elements.' "

Gevas, who was the director of the Gallery of Contemporary Art at Sacred Heart University for 23 years, has curated more than 100 exhibits. She also has developed the Sculpture Walk and University Art Collection, and executed nine voluntary Percent for Art Programs in Connecticut. She is a co-founder of the Stamford Loft Artists Association.

When curating or judging an exhibition, Gevas said, "you view the submitted works and think about how they fit into the theme of the exhibit, the available physical space and how they might look as part of a whole when they are installed.

"Many wonderful and diverse works were entered, and my selection of 49 of the 303 submissions represents a myriad of personal visions relating to `The Elements.' They spoke to me as the most compelling combination of works for the exhibition."

The participating artists are Jackie Avellar, Lucienne Buckner, Donna Calligan, Heidi Coleman, Elaine Conner, Lisa Cuscuna, William De La Mare, Elysa M. Demartini, Roberta Dixon, Jadu Durrans, Louise Flax, Heide Follin, Susan Frey, Danielle Goldstein, Lorie Gurian, Kirsti Holtan, Benice Horowitz, Yuko Ike, Karen Johnson, Judith Lambertson, Gina Kingsley, Marcia Korotkin, Tina Link, Karen Neems, Wendi Ohlson, Chris Plaisted, Kathryn Poch, Elisabeth Pollaert, Laurette L. Rindlaub, Amy Schott, Andrea Scott, Marlow D.J. Shami, Alissa Siegal, Marlene Siff, Phyllis Sinrich, Victoria Sivigny, Kathryn Spata, Malu Tan, Robert Urichio, Amy Vensel, Pierrette Wagner, Leslie Ware and Kathleen Wrampe.

The gallery is open from 1 to 4:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Admission and parking are free.
