A 16-year-old Darienite with no license took a family vehicle without their knowledge and smoked marijuana in it with his friends, police said.
Officers arrested the teen on charges of driving under the influence of alcohol or other drugs, failure to drive right and operating a vehicle without a license after they found him in Waveny Park at 8:37 a.m. Oct. 25, according to the report.
Officers were dispatched to the scene on a report that a vehicle had hit a tree. According to the report, the youth had a 15-year-old and two 16-year-old males passengers, who fled on foot after the incident. Police said no one was injured in the crash.
According to police, he will be tried in adult court, as the age cutoff is 16 years old. If further criminal charges are pursued for taking the family car, those would go to juvenile court, but none have been filed yet, police said. The case is under investigation.
He posted $250 bond and is scheduled to appear in court Nov. 5.
