Ryan J. Williams, 18, of 77 Chichester Road, New Canaan, was arrested July 5 on charges of third-degree assault and interfering with an officer.

Police said Williams punched a 13-year-old New Canaan boy in the face during the Family Fourth event at Waveny Park at around 9 p.m. The victim approached an officer immediately following the incident to report he had just been assaulted and that he knew the aggressor, according to the report.

With his lips swollen, the complainant told police that Williams approached him and his friends and started acting belligerent as if trying to start a fight, police said. Eventually, Williams, who was reportedly intoxicated, punched him in the face, the report stated.

The victim was treated by emergency medical technicians and then he helped officers find the suspect, police said. Officers found Williams in the park and he "became somewhat combative" while police were trying to take his cellphone, according to the report.

He posted $500 bond and is scheduled to appear in court July 18.
