The New Canaan High School Winter Musical "Sweet Charity" opens this week. This musical has Cy Coleman's familiar music, Dorothy Field's clever lyrics; the book is by Neil Simon and the original stylish choreographyis by Bob Fosse.
The show follows the life of Charity Hope Valentine (Alexa Holzberger), a dancer at the Fandango Dancehall in New York City in the 1960s. She, in fact, has charity and hope in abundance, and is ever hopeful that her heart will get as much attention as the one tattooed on her arm. But, in fact, her less than enviable love life is a series of ups with a lot of downs. She's either getting dumped by Charlie (Deven Appel ) or treated badly by Victorio (also Devon Appel) who only befriends her when his sizzling girlfriend Ursula (Olivia Canning) isn't available. And when she finally finds Oscar (Tyler Giggi) a nervous guy she meets in an elevator, he winds up taking her, just like the elevator, all the way up -- before her puts her down. But, there's always Nickie (Ali Rush), Helene (Allie Potenza) and Carmen (Samantha Tesluk) her closest friends at the Fandango Ballroom to help her through and as Charity always saying, what can you do, it's all down to "the fickle finger of fate."
`Sweet Charity' runs March 8, 9 and 10 at 7:30 p.m.. in the NCHS Auditorium. Tickets are on sale though March 9 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the high school lobby and one hour prior to show times.
