NEW CANAAN — Students at South School in New Canaan recently enjoyed a video game-themed field day.

Students from first through fifth grades played games inspired by Tetris, Angry Birds and Super Mario.

Josh McDonald, a South School physical education teacher, put a spin on traditional field day games, having students use slingshots for Angry Birds and play crab soccer as a take on the game Fifa World Cup.

Each year, McDonald chooses a new theme for the games.

“I felt relay races are too boring and not challenging enough,” he said. “It wasn’t fun, so it became themed.”
